Moana places the heart into the spiral on Te Kā’s chest, and the lava monster’s crust crumbles away, revealing the lush and radiant Te Fiti. Moana bids farewell to Maui and Te Fiti, returning home and reuniting with her parents. After placing a shell on top of the stack of stones placed by all previous chiefs, Moana takes up her role as chieftess and wayfinder, leading her people as they resume voyaging, accompanied by Maui. Moana sets sail on a camakau from the cavern along with her dimwitted pet rooster, Heihei, who stowed away on it. They are caught in a typhoon and shipwrecked on an island, where she finds Maui, who boasts about his achievements. She demands Maui return the heart, but he refuses and traps her in a cave before leaving on her boat.

She wakes up the next morning on a small island inhabited by Maui, who traps Moana in a cave after distracting her with a tune. After escaping the cave, the ocean sends Moana back on the sailboat to convince Maui. She shows him the heart and asks him to help her return it, but Maui backs away fearing that the heart is a trap for the person carrying it and that other creatures would kill to steal it for themselves. Moana, now a teenager, has the responsibility of becoming the next chief of the island as her father insists, but due to her close friendship with her grandmother, Gramma Tala, she keeps her dream of leaving the island alive. Moana insists on going beyond the reef to catch more, but her father dismisses her request, angered by her wishes.

One day, when Moana attempted to sail beyond the reef after an argument with her father, she got her foot injured when it was stuck on some coral. Moana attempted to hide her injured foot from her grandmother, but Tala was smart enough to see what happened and promised to not tell her father. At this, Moana was taken to a secret cave where Tala advised to bang a drum and that she would learn something of her heritage. However, during their journey, the comet explodes, indicating they have neared Motufetu, but are confronted by the Kakamora, who reveal that they too are trying to get home to their island, but can’t, especially with the giant clam blocking their way. One Kakamora, Kotu, decides to join Moana and sacrifices himself and Moana’s raft to save the ones of his fellow Kakamora as Moana, her crew, pets, and Kotu are swallowed by the giant clam.
She nevertheless escapes her cell while Tamatoa is distracted and uses a makeshift duplicate of Te Fiti’s heart to lure the crab’s attention away from Maui. This lively intelligent girl wants Moana to do what’s right for her people, but she also needs to find out what’s right for her. Moana realizes Maui is no longer a hero since he stole the heart and cursed the world, and convinces him to redeem himself by returning the heart.

A millennium later, Moana as a toddler discovers the heart as she is collecting shells near the ocean. After her chieftain father Tui orders her to return to the village, she never sees it until she has grown up.

She did not believe that anyone dangerous would appear if she showed the Heart around until the Kakamora revealed themselves before Moana and Maui. This section includes characters who will appear or have appeared in the franchise. Maui warns that Nalo’s realm is deadlier compared to the mortal realm and that fighting him will spell certain death for mere mortals. Nalo’s monsters ambush the group, damaging their raft and washing them ashore on an isolated island.
Meanwhile, Maui is seeking Motufetu himself since he had a previous quarrel with Nalo, but he is captured by Nalo’s enforcer, Matangi. Maui is reluctant to contact Moana, as he fears she may not survive if she comes to help. Moana and her crew are captured by the Kakamora, a tribe of savage coconut-like pirates that Moana previously encountered, who reveal that Nalo’s actions against Motufetu had caused them to be disconnected from their home island. A Kakamora named Kotu helps the crew paralyze a gargantuan monster clam inside of which is Matangi’s lair. While the crew finds Maui, Moana meets Matangi and learns that she is not happy serving Nalo. Matangi helps Moana escape and reunite with Maui and her friends, before sending them to where Nalo is.
